Meditation: From Blame to Seeing
Texts: 1 Samuel 16:1–13 and John 9:1–41
Settle
Find a comfortable posture.
Let your hands rest open.
Take a slow breath in…
and a slow breath out.
Again…in…and out…
Name the Reflex
Gently ask yourself:
Where am I looking for someone (or something) to blame right now?
A person? A circumstance? Myself?
No judgment. Just noticing.
A Different Question
Now offer yourself a different question:
Not “Who caused this?” but “What is God doing here?”
Let the question rest in you.
You do not have to answer quickly.
Seeing What Matters
Remember the line God speaks to Samuel:
People look at outward appearance; God looks at the heart.
Let that sink in.
Where am I focused on appearances—mine or someone else’s?
Where might God be inviting me to see what matters?
Light and Willingness
In John, Jesus refuses the blame game and instead brings light.
He invites participation—“Go. Wash.”
And the man responds.
Let this be a gentle invitation:
What is one small step I can take—one “sent” action—toward life?
Not a grand project.
Just one real thing.
Breath Prayer
Pray with your breath for one minute:
Inhale: Open my eyes
Exhale: Show me your work
Closing Prayer
God of light,
when I reach for blame, soften me.
When I cling to appearances, re-center me.
Teach me to see with the heart.
Give me courage to ask better questions,
patience to wait for clarity,
and willingness to participate in what you are doing here.
Lead me from blame to seeing—
and from seeing to life.
Amen.
