Meditation:  Enough Oil

Texts: Amos 5:18-24 | Matthew 25:1-13

Find a comfortable position and allow your body to settle. Let your breath slow. You do not need to arrive anywhere. You are already here.

Take a few moments to release whatever you carried into this space. Set it down gently. Right now, there is only this.

✤ ✤ ✤

Imagine you are holding a lamp.

It is lit. You are carrying it into the night — not at a moment of high drama, but simply walking forward in the ordinary dark of an ordinary life.

You have been carrying this lamp for some time. You have kept it burning through seasons of ease and seasons of difficulty. You have shown up. You have been present.

Now, in the quiet, allow yourself to look at the lamp honestly.

Gently ask yourself: In the ordinary days — not the festival days, not the days when I am at my best or trying my hardest, but the unremarkable days — am I producing oil? Am I living in a way that sustains the flame?

Not with shame. With honesty.

✤ ✤ ✤

There is something in us that resists our own light.

We are given access to the fullness of who we are as children of God — the authority, the capacity, the power to actually incarnate love and mercy in the world — and we pull back. We feign smallness. We settle for less than the life we are called to.

We are not malicious. We are afraid.

Sit with that for a moment. Not the shame of it, but the truth of it. What would it mean to actually live as a child of God — not someday, but now?

Gently ask yourself: What am I afraid of? What would I have to become — what would I have to stop pretending I am not — if I truly inhabited the fullness of who I already am?

Not with judgment. With curiosity.

✤ ✤ ✤

Here is what is true.

You are already a child of God. Not what you will become. Not what you will earn through extraordinary faithfulness. Already. Right now. By love freely given, not love merited.

The oil is not what earns you that identity. The identity is what produces the oil.

From that ground — from the relationship that is already given, already yours — the lamp burns. The light does not need to be forced. It flows.

Gently ask yourself: If I believed this — truly believed it — what would change? How would I live my ordinary life?

✤ ✤ ✤

Now pray:

God of the ever-flowing stream, you have already named me your child — not as a future reward, not as something I must still earn, but as who I already am, right now, by love freely given.

Help me to live from that truth — to move through my ordinary days with the confidence and care of one who knows whose they are, to offer love and mercy as naturally as water flows, not in anxious performance, hoping I have done enough, but in the freedom of a child who is already home.

I am already yours. The light is there.

Light my lamp.

Amen.
