Meditation: Until the Blessing Comes

Texts: Genesis 32:22-31 | Matthew 14:13-21

Find a comfortable position.

Take a slow breath in

and a slow breath out.

Let the noise of the day fall back a little.

You do not need to solve anything right now.

You do not need to arrive anywhere.

You are here, and that is enough.

Think of a place in your life right now that feels like a crossing — somewhere you are standing between what was and what has not yet arrived.  A relationship that has changed. A decision you cannot avoid. A loss that has left you in unfamiliar territory. A threshold you did not choose.

Jacob stood at the edge of the Jabbok River, alone in the dark, terrified of what morning would bring.

You may know something of that feeling.

Gently ask yourself: Where am I standing at the edge right now? What is it I am most afraid to cross toward?

Sit with whatever arises. There is no wrong answer. Simply notice.

Jacob held on through the night. Not passively. Not politely. He refused to let go of the One he was wrestling with until the blessing came. He had been given a promise — I am with you and will keep you wherever you go — and he held God to it.

He was willing to risk everything for that blessing.

Gently ask yourself: Is there something I have been waiting for God to resolve — when perhaps I am being invited to hold on rather than let go? What would it mean to stay in this struggle rather than find a way around it?

Notice what surfaces. Hold it gently.

The disciples looked at five loaves and two fish and a crowd of thousands. The math did not work. Jesus did not send the crowd away. He said: bring what you have here to me.

What they had was not enough. But offered — it became more than enough.

Gently ask yourself: What is the small, insufficient thing I have been hesitant to bring — because it does not seem like it could matter? What might happen if I placed it in God's hands anyway?

Rest in that question for a moment.

· · ·

When you are ready, close with this prayer:

Living God,

meet us at the river's edge —

in the places we are most alone, most afraid,

most certain we do not have enough to offer.

Stay with us until the blessing comes.

And give us the courage to bring what we have

and trust you to make it enough.

Amen.
