Meditation: From Hosanna to Crucify

Texts: Matthew 21:1–11; Philippians 2:5–11; Matthew 27:11–54

Settle

Find a comfortable posture.

Let your hands rest open.

Breathe in… slowly.

Breathe out… slowly.

Notice the swing

Bring to mind the two chants of Palm Sunday:

“Hosanna.”

“Crucify.”

Not as history only—

as a mirror of the heart.

Gently ask yourself:

Where do I say “Hosanna” when life supports my expectations?

Where do I turn toward “Crucify” when life resists them?

No judgment. Just honesty.

What am I clinging to?

Often the swing happens when something I’m attached to feels threatened:

Approval.

Control.

Being right.

Safety.

My plan.

Name one attachment that is active in you right now.

The mind of Christ

Hear Paul’s invitation:

“Have the mind of Christ.”

Christ does not cling.

Christ does not grasp.

Christ pours out love.

Let this become a breath prayer:

Inhale: Root me in Love.

Exhale: Loosen my grip.

Repeat slowly for a minute.

A Holy Week practice

Bring to mind one situation you expect to face this week—

a conversation, a stressor, a decision.

Imagine yourself reaching the moment where you would normally swing:

Hosanna… to Crucify.

Now imagine a different response:

A pause.

A softening.

A return to Love.

Ask:

What would it look like to choose one small act of kenosis—one small letting go—right there?

Closing prayer

Christ of the palms and the Passion,

when I cling to outcomes, free me.

When my fear hardens into judgment, soften me.

When I’m tempted to turn on love because life feels threatening, hold me steady.

Root me in the Love that does not rise and fall with the crowd.

Teach me the mind of Christ—

so I may become free to love.

Amen.
