Meditation: Beloved in the Wilderness
Texts: Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7 and Matthew 4:1-11
Prepare the Space
Find a comfortable posture.
Let your hands rest open in your lap.
If you’re able, let your feet touch the ground.
Take a slow breath in… and gently release it.
Again… breathe in… and let go.
Allow your breathing to become natural.
Remember the Truth
In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus is baptized and named: Beloved.
And then—immediately—he is led into the wilderness.
Not to become beloved.
Not to prove belovedness.
But to live from it.
Let that settle.
The wilderness is not a sign that God has left you.
The wilderness is often the place where the deepest truth rises to the surface.
Notice the Pressure
Bring to mind the “pressure” you feel right now—
anxiety, uncertainty, fatigue, fear, urgency, loneliness…
Don’t analyze it. Simply notice it.
And notice what it tends to pull up in you:
the urge to control
the urge to protect and withdraw
the urge to prove yourself
the urge to numb out
Name it gently, without judgment.
Hear the Voice of Scarcity
Now listen for the scarcity story—the voice that sounds like “common sense.”
It might sound like:
“You don’t have enough.”
“You’re on your own.”
“Protect what’s yours.”
“Prove yourself.”
Just notice that voice. Don’t argue with it.
Name it for what it is: a story.
Return to Belovedness
Now, place a hand over your heart (if you’d like).
As you breathe in, silently pray:
Beloved.
As you breathe out:
I choose life.
Repeat several times, slowly.
Choose Your Next Faithful Step
In the wilderness, Jesus faces the same pressures we face:
“Secure yourself first.”
“Prove yourself.”
“Take power. Control the system.”
Lent is not about perfection.
Lent is about becoming aware.
So ask yourself, gently:
When pressure rises in me, what is my default?
Control? Withdrawal? Proving? Numbing?
Now ask:
What would it look like to live from belovedness instead?
Choose one small practice for this week:
Wake up: Notice when fear is driving your choices.
Let go: Release one control strategy you keep gripping.
Choose life: Take one concrete step toward love—generosity, truth-telling, presence, repair.
Keep it small. Keep it real.
Closing Prayer
God of the wilderness and the garden,
when fear becomes loud in me, wake me up.
When scarcity shapes my choices, help me let go.
When I feel powerless or anxious, return me to the truth:
I am your beloved—right here, even now.
Form in me a spacious heart,
so I may choose life, choose love,
and become more fully alive in you.
Amen.
